External flash modules have been coming in to the market when external camera are almost totally out. Still this is the transition phase and i think flash also needs to be built-in in a nice camera phone. Nokia and SonyEricsson have also released their flash modules to enhance the picture taking experience. Still the challenges in this area are power consumption and weight management.
Features
There are some features that make Siemens flash module having and edge on the similar products from Nokia and SonyEricsson. First is the red-eye reduction. Red-eye reduction is the main challenge that one has to face when it comes with digital photography and flash. Still havent heard any practical response about this feature but even then its good to know about it. The second key feature given to it is "sensor-controlled automatic light exposure"; and its also fascinating to hear that. The negative point is that the flash gets its energy from the cell phone, so it drains the battery after excessive usage. The flash module is usually compatible with the new series 65 of Siemens cell phones.
Conclusion
I think nowadays, a flash is almost necessary for a camera phone. Users get attracted if it's built-in and usually give no response if its an external accessory. So, there are not that much users who use that accessory. If someone is highly interested in taking high quality pictures, still he prefers some digital camera. And if someone needs a camera and a cell phone "two in one" even then he wont like flash to be external!.
