7380

General

Nokia 7380, a successor of Nokia 7280, relatively smaller and lighter handset was designed in a unique style with its unique spinner wheel, charming leather-inspired interaction materials at back with mirrored front, sophisticatedly fixed metal, and surfaces that are clear and silver in color, the Nokia 7360 phone was designed to provide an unforgettable distinct style.

Nokia 7380 is more or less a bar style tri-band handset, supporting 3 GSM bands i.e. GSM 900, GSM 1800, and GSM 1900. The handset also has the ability to switch between the bands automatically.

Package

Nokia 7380 comes with a nice package containing the Nokia 7380 handset, Built-in Nokia Battery BL-8N, a Standard Nokia Charger AC-1, Nokia's Dual Headset HS-14, a user guide mentioning how to use the handset, a pouch, a strap and styles pack are also packed in the sales package. In short, the package contains all of the accessories that one needs.

User Interface

As you would have seen that the handset is lacking a keypad. Don't make any false assumptions, the handset does provides some other interfaces to the handset. The handset has a modified version of Series 40 UI, an IPod-Esque scroll wheel. In place of conventional soft keys and other call controls, the handset provides the same functionality with two rubber arcs. In the middle there is an orange glowing circular dial control providing the functionality of a Select button.

Nokia, in Nokia 7380 has sacrificed the 3 x 3 icon display rather offers the conventional old fashioned Nokia menu style that is only able to display one section per screen on a single time

The dial works same as the two-way scroll controls in different handsets. You can just scroll through a complete large list with just one thumb press but what to say for going through a large list especially contact lists or message lists. This is a real big problem with Nokia 7380.

The bad thing is that using the scroll interface for writing text messages in English, one need to work with much patience for such purpose. The limitation of screen size and conventional reading interfaces, it become quite hectic when you are reading a relatively long SMS.

Design & Display

Nokia 7380 is a light weight handset and weighs only about 80 grams with the dimensions of 114 x 30 x 20 mm and the handset occupies a volume of only 63 cc.

I could not stop saying that this is the lightest handset that I have ever seen. A lot of the handset claims to be the lightest handsets but their weight is much more than this handset. In my book, Nokia 7360 was the lightest handset weighing 92 grams but this handset is 12 grams lighter than Nokia 7360. Same as with Motorola Razr which is thinnest handset but weighs about 125 grams, Nokia E-60 weighs 117 grams and same for other famous handsets.

As compared to volume, this handset occupies very less volumes as compared to other handsets. Nokia 7360 is also a less volume occupying handset and has only 72 cc of volume, but Nokia 7380 occupies 9 cc less volume than Nokia 7360.

Nokia 7380 has a 64 K color TFT display screen with 16-bit color depth providing a resolution of 104 x 208 pixels.

The display is not much as good as it is present in most of the handsets today. All of the market giants are now providing a better display screen than the one used to be in the old fashioned handsets.

Consider Sony Ericsson brands W550, W900, P990 all of these are providing 256 K color screen, Motorola's brands E1070 and Razr V3x also provide 256K color screen. Besides that Nokia's own brands like Nokia 3250 and Nokia 7370 are providing 256 K color screen and even there are handsets in the market that are providing 16M color screen with the fact that they are also Nokia's product (Nokia E-60, Nokia E-61 providing 16M color screens). So this would be quite difficult to retain the market position with such a dull 64K color screen.

Coming to screen size, Nokia 7380 is providing a 104 x 208 pixel screen. For this I would just say to you people that this is the worst screen I have ever come across. I was thinking that Nokia 7360 was providing a poorest screen with 128 x 160 pixels but i am sure I was wrong. I think that Nokia was not planning to keep this handset in market for a longer period of time because there are a lot of handsets that are providing at least 240 x 320 pixel screen like Motorola E1070, Motorola Razr V3x, Sony Ericsson W900, Sony Ericsson P990 and even Nokia's brands like Nokia 7370 and Nokia E-61 even Nokia's handset Nokia E-61 will be having a 352 x 416 pixel screen. So in short the screen resolution is as poor as the screen supported colors.
