Nokia releases first clamshell cell phone

The first thing that comes into my mind when I think about Nokia 7200 is that it is the first cell phone of Nokia presented with clamshell form-factor. The series 7xxx is always said to be a series with experimental phones e.g. Nokia 7600, 7700 etc were presented by a new concept in the cell phone technology.

Nokia 7200 as a fashion phone

Along with the clamshell, the fashion phone of new level (according to Nokia) comes up with some new concepts and features. The exterior of the phone is covered by a new textile fabric with intricate designs. Each 7200 comes with a Style Pack that includes coordinated covers, soft pouch and wrist strap with matching wallpapers and screensavers. More textile covers are also expected as an accessory.

New concepts in Nokia 7200

The dimensions of nokia cellular phone 7200 can be said somewhat big (86x50x26 mm, 115 grams), but it can easily fit into a palm. The battery can stand up to 3 days under normal conditions and usage. Absence of external antenna is a plus point. The phone features 65k color TFT 128 X 128 pixels internal LCD, and a monochrome 96x 36 external display which is quite necessary for a clamshell phone of today. In fact, it is the first phone of series 40 that supports 65k color screen.

External features of Nokia 7200

The VGA camera has similar capabilities as Nokia 6220, 6230, 6650 and 7600. The phone can also record video clips (15 seconds max). In connectivity options, Nokia 7600 supports EDGE, GPRS, HCSD and IrDa. Bluetooth is missing. The phone supports FM Radio and Mp3 files which increase its validity of being a fashion phone.

Conclusion

As a conclusion, it is the first clamshell cell phone by Nokia, but in my opinion there are certain mistakes in the design of this phone. I see many people, who buy clamshell phones because they are smaller in length, but the LCD is large relative to a bar style phone. Nokia 7200 reduces its length by the clamshell feature, but the LCD size is not that big (128 x 128). Furthermore, the phone supports mp3 files but there is no space for expandable memory. With the total 4mb memory pool, you cannot enjoy nokia 7200 as an mp3 player. The phone has many competitive rivals in the market according to price and features e.g. Samsung E700/E710, Sonyericsson Z600, Motorola V600 etc. If you are a big fan of Nokia and you like clamshell phones, then this is for you. Otherwise you can buy one of the above phones. In other words, with 400-450 $ dollar price, this cell phone is overrated and for money around 300$ this is a nice and balanced phone with good functionality.
