Conclusion

Browsing Support

Motorola has not launched Motorola Rokr specifically for internet lovers but still the handset provides support for browsing and can serve the general needs of these users to some extent.

Nokia 7380 supports a WAP 2.0, xHTML, and HTML multimode browser to facilitate the internet browsing. Talking about WAP, the handset is able to support WSP/HTTP 1.1, WTCP/IP, xHTML, Mobile Profile, WCSS, Cookies, WTLS class 2, TLS 1.0/SSL 3.0

Messaging Support

Motor0la Rokr supports two way text messaging, picture messaging, and also supports sound messaging. The handset is EMS 5.0 compatible. Motorola Rokr also supports instant messaging to other handsets or computers (Web-Chat) plus Wireless Village Instant Messaging.

Motorola Rokr is also capable of sending and receiving multimedia messages. Motorola Rokr supports MMS OMA 1.2 where you can place multiple items in a message like text, video, image and also audio clips, excluding ITunes. You can also make a multi-slide presentation with this and send and receive such messages.

E-Mail Clients

Motorola Rokr, like all of the other functionality loaded handsets, support E-Mails and is compatible with all of the popular emailing protocols like SMTP, POP3 and IMAP4.

Memory

Motorola Rokr has only 5 MB of built-in internal memory that is shared among all of the applications. There is a MicroSD or TransFlash card slot available to extend the memory. Using the extension slot you can extend the memory up to 1GB.

The handset that used to contain the minimum memory was Nokia 3250 that has only 10 MB of internal memory but Motorola Rokr has even less than 10MB of internal memory. This is quite strange that the handset which is capable of playing music, making videos and taking photographs has such a little memory. So one has to buy the memory card along with the handset to meet the memory needs, this may impact the sales of the handset because may be some users don't want to purchase the memory card immediately. So Motorola should have provided some more built-in memory.

Better Browsing Capabilities

Although the current Rokr's browsing capabilities are sufficient to meet the basic browsing requirements but a lot of improvements are possible. Motorola Rokr could have supported the compatibility of different markup languages as well like cHTML which is the support for mobile extension, different scripting languages like JavaScript, VBScript etc. Providing File Upload functionality would have been produced quite interesting results in the sale of Motorola Rokr.

GPS

Global positioning system is also a demanding feature for the users. So this could be great winning points for the handsets that will be incorporating this feature in their handset. Motorola being a big market player could have taken that step in order to maintain its position in the market. A new mobile phone series called TWIG, a joint venture of Benefon and NAVTEQ will contain fully integrated GPS system in them.

3G

3G, which is nowadays becoming a major factor for the mobile sale, is lacking in this handset. There are a lot of handsets produced by all major companies since last quarter of year 2005 that are providing 3G support, Sony Ericsson's W900, Motorola E770, Nokia's E-Series, are some of them, so it is quite strange that Motorola Rokr lacks this functionality. Besides enjoying other functionalities why Motorola has restricted to enjoy the video call feature.

USB Version 1.0

The handset has a USB port and supports USB 1.0, you can use the USB cable to transfer the music from and to handset along with exchanging pictures and video clips. But having a USB 1.0 in these days is not a feature, instead having USB2.0 can be a feature these days and most of the handsets are now integrating USB 2.0 in their handsets.

Bluetooth Version 1.1

The handset supports Bluetooth and you can use Bluetooth handsfree along with the transfer of data in to and from the handset. But Motorola Rokr supports Bluetooth Version 1.1 which is becoming an old technology. People are shifting from Version 1.1 to Bluetooth version 2.0. Just like Nokia has launched Nokia 7380 that supports Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, I suggest same to Motorola as well. The other limitation is that we cannot synchronize the handset with ITunes using Bluetooth, which ruins the purpose of having Bluetooth.

Miscellaneous

There are a lot of functions and it would not be possible to mention all of them, but I am trying to list some important ones;
  • Bluetooth wireless technology is also supported in the handset.
  • Motorola Rokr has the support of MMS; you can make small movies in the handset using SMIL and can send via MMS.
  • Motorola Rokr supports multiple languages just like other famous handsets.
  • Motorola Rokr is also equipped with Voice recording facility.
  • Integrated handsfree speaker is also present in Motorola Rokr.
  • Voice dialing is also present in the handset.
  • PC synchronization is available in Motorola Rokr.
  • Motorola Rokr supports GPRS Class 10 (4+1/3+2 slots) with the data rate of 32 - 48 kbps.
  • Motorola Rokr does not have EDGE compatibility.
  • Motorola Rokr does not support either HSCSD, high-speed circuit-switched data, or CSD, circuit-switched data.
  • No infrared port present in the Motorola Rokr.
  • Motorola Rokr supports Digital TTY/TDD for people that face difficulty in hearing.

Conclusion

If you are a music lover and don't want to buy an IPod and you also need a handset then Motorola Rokr is there for you. Besides of the simple design, the handset is able to fulfill all of your music needs and mobile needs. Motorola Rokr is the first handset in the market that supports the ITunes synchronization; you can have 100 songs of your own choice into your handset from ITunes. You can use the handsfree or the powerful speakers to listen to the music. The handset also supports famous email protocols with all sort of messaging. So I would just say that you are the perfect match for this handset. You don't need to purchase costly walkman phones or expensive IPods.
